Whoa, this was awesome! I’ve been on a use-leftover-pumpkin-wherever-I-can kick and tossed it into another food just the other night. Remember Popovers, also known as Yorkshire Puddings? Well in a quick thrown-together meal (yes, there was no meal plan this week because we’re trying to deal with all the leftovers from last week!) I grabbed a …
I have always loved pumpkin bread. I’m talking about the classic “bread” that is loaded in sugar and oil and wonderful pumpkin flavor that is delicious, but in my opinion more of a cake than a bread. So in the last year I’ve been working on translating that flavor into a “real” bread, with yeast …
My family eats a lot of bread. A pretty average lunch for my assistants is peanut butter and jelly. Sadly peanut butter is not allowed at the school so there have been some adjustments to the sandwich this fall, but we’re still eating a lot of bread. As much as I love a really chewy …
My Youngest Assistant and I stopped by the incredible St. Jacobs Market (which is still awesome in spite of burning down a month ago!) on Thursday and grabbed a huge bag (1/2 bushel) of sweet yellow peppers. The bag cost $8. Considering that peppers can cost as much as a dollar each at the grocery …
I have more or less stopped blogging. Mostly because I’ve been so busy, but also I’ve had a shortage of ideas lately. Anyways, this is simply an update on what I’m up to lately around here at the Local Kitchener. Apples. This has been an incredible apple season, so good that many are free (if …
Meal-planning is an important part of our week. It allows us to be more prepared and relaxed with regards to our nightly meals and reduces stress. It also makes eating locally much easier because we take the time to figure out what seasonal foods are available and how we can use them. If you live …
After returning to town we didn’t have time to hit up all of our favorite sources for fresh local foods, but we did find Ontario peaches and plums at the grocery store (they seemed to be from the Niagara region) and they were delicious! As it were, I was craving salsa (this is pretty much …
Pizza is my favorite food. It’s my favorite food to make from scratch. It’s my favorite to go out for. Frozen pizza is even my favorite store-bought food (and one of the only ones I’m willing to eat)! Since pizza varies so much depending on where it’s from—homemade, pizzeria, grocery store, etc.—I don’t mind eating …
“You could make zucchini bread.” Those were Madame’s parting words the other day as she left for work. I looked at the large zucchini sitting on the counter. I smiled and sighed. Waiting in the garden were two more. (And this is in spite of the squash vine borers!). Zucchini is wonderful, but it is …
Same picture, just looking more closely. Gardening is a huge part of my life. Gardening is also a source of tension in my life. It brings me great joy yet often brings great sadness too. I suppose it is a bit like children. Well, maybe not quite like children, but the point is most …
For several years I was a vegetarian*. Because those years were very formative years for me as a cook I have continued to prepare mostly vegetarian meals since my return to occasionally eating meat. In my view veggie burgers do not replace meat burgers. They are simply a different food, probably owing more to falafel …
One of our favourite wedding gifts was the classic cookbook Joy of Cooking. We still say that if we had to own just one cookbook this would be it. These days we use other cookbooks more often but still return to the Joy from time to time, and this is a meal that came straight from …
This week featured several meals from Martha Stewart’s Everyday Food magazine. Don’t judge. We had a one-year subscription to this magazine when we were first married and it was great. We’ve held onto the issues and use them as monthly seasonal cookbooks as many of the recipes featured use fresh, seasonal ingredients. In fact I …
This is part 3 in what has turned into “Dandelion Greens Week.” Sorry for not proclaiming the week as such in advance, I guess I’m not such a great planner…. Oh, and I’m sharing the recipe at Food Renegade’s Fight Back Friday. This pizza is pretty simple; it is a pizza with Dandelion Pesto as the base, …
I know that last week’s seedling update was not good. It was also somewhat dramatic. I’ll keep today’s update simple; as stated in the title, “All is Well.” And even though we had nothing to do with planting them, there are a few lovely flowers to enjoy right now. The seedlings are still acclimating which …
This post looks at Bailey’s Local Foods, a local online farmer’s market serving the Waterloo Region (which includes Kitchener!). I had the chance to sit down with the founder, Nina, a few weeks ago and one of the current owners, Rachael, a little while after. It was great talking with both of them about the …
Chatelaine Magazine has a new weekly contest called “Cooking Club” in which they post a recipe and people make it and then share their pics of the finished product. I am very glad I participated this week because the cookies are AMAZING. Madame, two of her colleagues, and my friends next door all agreed! …
I realized Wednesday morning that I didn’t have apples for the Beet and Apple Salad! I was moping around before Madame left for work and she said to me, “Why don’t we just eat one of our frozen meals?” So we did. And the meal was a fairly complete meal—vegetables, protein, carbs—so I decided not …
I referenced a few days ago that I had made ciabatta with some of my pizza dough. I like to make my dough 1-3 days in advance to enhance the flavor*. Lately I’ve been using dough that is more or less a combination of pizza dough and ciabatta. Essentially the recipe is a ciabatta recipe …
I came across the Kusherie recipe in the More With Less cookbook back in January. I tried it and my family loved it! It is a straight-forward recipe that brings together a number of wonderful flavours and textures and makes a really filling meal! With a side of glazed carrots and yogurt the whole meal …

Around Kitchener and Waterloo cabbage and mushroom can be found locally grown all year. In the winter it is cabbage that was grown in the fall and has been stored. The rest of the year it’s totally way fresh. Either way, cabbage is a wonderful vegetable with many uses. We ate this as a … Continue reading
Here are pictures from our trip out to the Cider Press at Rolling Acres near St. Jacobs, Ontario. It’s a 20 minute drive from our house and we’ve been there three times this fall. You can read about our trip here. The press is in the silver building on the left. The apples are rinsed … Continue reading

The chaotic and overwhelming season of preserving is hopefully nearing its end, although we do have several boxes of apples sitting in the garage, reminding us there’s is still a bit more to be done. Today I tackled a more present problem in the fridge—2 small baskets of fruit that were looking sadder each day. … Continue reading
This post comes from Sarah, a guest blogger who lives in Melbourne, Australia. The dreaded weeknight dinner, the bane of so many busy working folks’ lives; work can quickly take over our lives, taking the bulk of our time and not providing a whole lot of joy. Perhaps you go to the gym after … Continue reading
